Independent Four-monthly Magazine of Visual Culture

roots§routes stems from the need to create a space for reflection on the role that contemporary aesthetics play, or could play, in relation to anthropological themes and contexts, and in relation to a global scenario which discusses and problematizes the concept of colonial and postcolonial.

The magazine is co-directed by Viviana Gravano, contemporary art historian and Giulia Grechi, visual anthropologist, with an editorial team composed of five curators of contemporary art: Paola BommaritoGiulia Crisci, Laura Estrada Prada, Carolina Farina, Rossana Macaluso.

roots§routes investigates the aesthetical and anthropological practices, in order to create and represent a discourse on identity and difference, exploring its potential for criticism and epistemological breakthrough.

Every issue of roots§routes has a theme through which some contributions are requested to several researchers, theoreticians and artists. Such contributions may have different forms, videos, images, audio, interviews and texts.

The magazine aims to carry out a contextual and positioned rereading of colonialism and post colonialism as a process of global and transnational relevance that concerned, and still concern today, both colonizing countries and the colonized (though naturally in different ways), and also those that seemingly have never experienced colonialism directly.

Willing to present itself as an international platform, roots§routes has chosen to keep all contributions in their original language, without any sort of translation.

Editorial Board


Viviana Gravano lives and works in Rome where she was born in 1961. She is a Contemporary Art Curator and Professor of Art History at the Accademia delle Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, and at the IED (Istituto Europeo del Design) in Rome. She is also the Director of the Event and Museum Curator at IED in Rome. She is in the editorial board  of the journal “Art’O_Cultura e Politica delle arti sceniche”; she was photo editor and editor in the journal “Gomorra – Territori e Culturi nelle Metropoli Contemporanee”; she was Assistant Director in the journal “Avatar-Dislocazione tra Antropologia, Comunicazione e Arti Visive”; she was Curator in the Nova Gallery and in LopLop Gallery in Rome. She was the author of the radio program The magic eyes, broadcasted by RAI Radio3. She published many essays in exhibition catalogues, books and journals, such as: L’Arte fotografica, Fotografi da tutto il mondo nelle collezioni italiane, Fondazione Italiana per la Fotografia, Palazzo Cesi, Acquasparta(TR), Carte Segrete, Roma 1996; L’immagine fotografica, Mimesis, Milano 1997; Crossing. Giulia Grechi holds a PhD in “Theory and social research” at the University La Sapienza (Rome, Italy). She has been research fellow at “L’Orientale” (Naples, Italy) since January 2015, as a member of the EU Project “MeLa – European Museums in the Age of Migrations” (EU-7PQ), where she has been working on the relation between museums, contemporary anthropology and contemporary art. Her research interests include cultural anthropology, cultural and post-colonial studies, museography, with a focus on contemporary art and on representations of the body. She teaches Photography – social communication at the Fine Arts School of Brera (Milan, Italy), Cultural Anthropology at the Fine Arts School of Naples and at IED – Istituto Europeo di Design in Rome, where she has been co-coordinator of the Master in Art Contemporary and Museum Curator. She is editor-in-chief of the on-line journal roots§routes – research on visual culture, and president of the cultural association Routes Agency, based in Rome. As Routes Agency, she curated exhibitions and conferences in many cultural spaces (such as the MAXXI Museum and the Pigorini Ethnographic Museum in Rome). She participated in many international research projects, such as REcall – European Conflict Archaeological Landscapes Reappropriation (Politecnico di Milano, Aalborg Universitet, Newcastle University, NTNU – Trondheim, Falstad Centre, Museo diffuso della Resistenza di Torino, Museum of Romsdal, Ergan Foundation, Routes Agency); Transnationalizing Modern Languages Mobility, Identity and Translation in Modern Italian Cultures (University of Bristol, Queen Margareth University Edinburgh, The University of Warwick, University of St Andrews, Arts and Humanities Research Council, Routes Agency). She participated in many conferences, such as: Visualizing Europe. She recently published La rappresentazione incorporata. Una etnografia del corpo tra stereotipi coloniali e arte contemporanea (Bonanno 2011 e Mimesis 2016). She edited (together with Iain Chambers and Mark Nash) The Ruined Archive (2014), and (together with Viviana Gravano) Presente Imperfetto. Eredità coloniali e immaginari razziali contemporanei (forthcoming, February 2016).

Editorial Staff


Paola Bommarito born in Palermo, lives and works in Rome e Palermo. PhD student in European Cultural Studies/Europäische Kulturstudien (International) at University of Palermo with a research project titled Representations and practices in the public spaces. Artistic projects and socio-political contexts. Has studied History of Art (University of Palermo) with a dissertation about Situationist International. In 2010 she completed the Master Art Contemporary and Museum Curator (IED, Rome) with a dissertation exploring site-specific interventions on the recovery of historical memories of places to the border and in downfall. Her research interests involve cultural studies, visual studies, public art and participatory practices with a particular focus on its relation with cultural and socio-political contexts. She is editor and essayst for roots§routes, research on visual cultures, an online magazine exploring the relationship beetwen contemporary aesthetics and anthropological themes and contests. She is curator in Routes Agency, working in the production of exhibitions and cultural projects and she founded Ulissi, a research project and artistic practice with the aim of investigate mafias’ imaginaries in contemporary cultures. She is curator of cultural and participatory projects at Associazione Officina Rigenerazione. From September 2011 to January 2016 she has been professor at IED school of Management, Rome. From February 2011 to March 2015 she has been coordinator assistant and professor of the Master in Art Contemporary and Museum Curator (IED, Rome). From May 2010 to January 2015 she has worked at the Swiss Institute in Rome in the production of exhibitions and cultural projects and in the organization of the artistic residency project Studio Roma – Transdisciplinary program on the contemporary.


Laura Estrada Prada, artist and contemporary art curator born in Bogotá, Colombia. In 2007 she leaves her home country and moves to Italy, where she enrolls in an undergraduate course in Photography at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Rome. In 2011, after finishing her studies in photography, she continues her studies and completes a graduate diploma titled: Master in Curatore Museale at IED. In 2012, she curates the exhibition Singolarità mobili che abitano uno spazio nomade, together with the curatorial collective Gruntumolani. The video art exhibition takes place in la Casa dei Teatri in Rome. In 2012, she interns at Routes Agency to later become partner. In early 2013, her artistic installation and performance Passa-acque: Rilascio di un documento di viaggio is chosen as one of the winning projects for the call that led to the exhibition [S]oggetti Migranti, project within Idee Migranti held at the Prehistoric and Ethnographic Museum ‘Luigi Pigorini’ in Rome. In 2016 she collaborates with the Programs and External Affairs Offices of the American Academy in Rome. That same year she graduates Summa Cum Laude, earning a BA in Art History from The American University of Rome. Her thesis project concentrates on the sense of smell and contemporary art. Laura has also worked as the production assistant for several artists such as Erika Diettes for her project Silencios and Valentina Vetturi for her projects Alzheimer Caffè at MAXXI, La Mossa di Ettore at MACRO and A Better Chance to Gain Enough Entropy for the 15° Quadriennale di Roma held at the Palazzo delle Esposizoni. She currently works as the Alumni and Development Coordinator for The American University of Rome.


Rossana Macaluso born in Palermo in 1983, during high school Macaluso developed an interest in the Art field.  Therefore she pursued her education course studying Scienze e Tecnologia dell’Arte, della Moda e dello Spettacolo – curriculum Arte) at University of Palermo. During the university years, she has collaborated with a photographic atelier, setting up fashion shows and set designs, and developed an interest in all aspects concerning museum settings and events organization. Afterwards, she developed further her experience in the exhibition set-up: she rearranged the exhibition areas of Archaeological museums in the Province of Palermo, and works as a guide for the  Museo Diocesano of Palermo. After being selected for a Ministerial project (MIBAC Ministero dei Beni e le Attività Culturali), of cataloguing for Turin University (coordinated by Gianni Scolla),  she started working at the catalogue of the Department of Historical and Artistic Studies at the University of Palermo. Since she felt more attracted by the career of art curator, she decided to quit and move to Rome, in order to attend the Master for Event and Museum Curator organized by IED (Istituto Europeo del Design). Meanwhile, she worked as an intern at the Sales Auction institute Dorotheum. Her curatorial research is mainly addressed to all issues concerning the relationship between arts and architecture. She is currently a free lance curator and collaborates to different projects. She dreams of completing with glass pile-dwelling glass the empty spaces of Colosseum.


Giulia Crisci is an independent curator and activist. She studied Art History at the Universities of Palermo and Turin, graduated with a dissertation on Intangile Public Space. She is interested in the relationship between art and activism within the public realm and the social sphere. Enacted practices – often in the form of collectives or assemblies – are concentrated on territorial communities, with a particular focus on the city and its tension zones, in the attempt to trigger spaces for critical thought and collective action.
She is working as Assistant Director and Curator, UNIDEE – University of Ideas, at Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto. She is currently part of the coordination team of Resò- International Network for Art Residencies and Educational Programs.
She is editor for roots§routes, research on visual cultures. Within Routes Agency, she founded Ulissi, a research project and artistic practice with the aim of investigate mafias’ imaginaries within contemporary cultures, towards a creative rethinking of social antimafia, focused on re-imagining and reuse of confiscated assets from the mafia.
She worked as personal assistant to the artist Marzia Migliora. She was assistant curator for the 2014’s edition of Eco e Narciso, Turin’s public art project. Giulia curated Valentina Miorandi’s itinerant project Turning Tables. She collaborated with Balloon Project as editor and curator. She was a member of the educational department of Palermo’s Museo Riso.
She collaborated with “Libera in Sicily. Associations, names and numbers against mafias” designing Già giovani e innovazione 2015, Summer School on social innovation and participatory planning.
She was part of the Beni comuni e lavoratori dell’immateriale movement.


Carolina Farina is a photographer and an independent curator. Born in Cremona, she lives and works in Rome. She graduated in Photography at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera in Milan with a thesis on the relationship between photography and visual imagery in mass media cultures. She attended the Masters in Museum Curator and performance events at the European Institute of Design in Rome. Her research focus, between practice and theory, focuses on micro-narratives of everyday life with special attention on private emotional archives and memories related to the objects. She is editor for roots§routes, research on visual cultures and part of the curatorial collective Routes Agency for which she works a social media strategist. She is a stage photographer and editor for blog. She has made photographic reportages dedicated to the visual and performing arts for: The pathos of the form. Step Two, Biennale College – Theatre, Attraversamenti Multipli and ArTransit – performing art in motion. She collaborated on the curatorship of art-video show conTENporary words of art and she is co-editor of the book Immaginari (post)coloniali. Memorie pubbliche e private del colonialismo italiano. In 2012 she has been called from Space B.go Loreto SP / CRAC othervision of Cremona to expose the photographic performance project OB-VIAM dedicated to many neglected and forbidden public spaces of the city. She is co-curator of the photographic project UOMINI DENTRO made in the San Vittore prison in Milan and dedicated to the males and females inmates working in prison.
